What are Caligo Safe Wash Inks from Cranfield?

Caligo Safe Wash Inks are premium, artist-grade oil-based printmaking inks made by Cranfield Colours, a UK-based manufacturer known for high-quality inks. You might have seen them across social media. The “Safe Wash” line stands out because these inks behave like traditional oil-based inks (rich colour, slow drying, excellent working properties on the press or by hand) but clean up so very easily with just liquid soap and cold water (no harsh solvents required!). This makes them a popular choice for non-toxic or low-toxicity printmaking.

They are avaible from Broad Canvas in a wide range of colours, including process (CMYK) sets, earth tones, brights, and soft shades, plus modifiers like extender and opaque white. 

Key Features:

Formulation: Made with finely ground lightfast pigments in polymerized vegetable oil (often renewable linseed oil) plus special emulsifiers that allow soap-and-water cleanup. They have a high pigment load for vibrant, archival prints and contain minimal driers (<1%). 

Print quality: Deliver strong, crisp results on both damp and dry paper. They roll out smoothly and work well for hand-printing or press work.

Safety & convenience: AP non-toxic approved in many markets, lower VOCs, minimal odor compared to traditional solvent-based inks. Ideal for home studios or educational settings.
