A Great Wonder in Heaven

About the artist

Living close to Oxford and London, my work is influenced by both the ancient countryside and the future-focused experiences of a vibrant, global city. I want to alter people’s perceptions – subtly changing mindsets through art – and bringing some of the ‘unseen’ into reality. I took a BA in Graphic Design, Illustration and New Media, which was a platform to try new and adventurous combinations of media styles, both physical and digital. Subsequent studies in ancient civilisations and esoteric literature means I can’t help but add a mystical twist to my work. In 2012 and 2013 I was selected as a category finalist in the prestigious Lumen Prize art and technology competition. I was immensely proud to see my works tour the globe with galleries in London, NYC, Shanghai & Hong Kong. It was also fantastic to meet other artists from around the world. In my other life, I create graphic design for some of the world’s most recognisable companies, produce award-winning conceptual DJ mixes and publish novels and real treasure hunt books via my Firesnake Books imprint.

Title of artwork

A Great Wonder in Heaven

Description of artwork

The title is a description from Christmas 1642, when night after night, strange lights in the sky were witnessed by the villagers of Kineton, north of Banbury. Descriptions of a roaring, ghostly battle in the sky – assumed to be a spectral recreation of the Battle of Edgehill, six months prior – formed the one and only British government report concluding that apparitions were in fact responsible for the audio-visual commotion. This acrylic painting on wood describes the brutal clash that preceded the visions, transposed with the unfathomable atmosphere of the otherworldly aftermath. Urgent, subconscious movements across the fields where blood was spilt and screams rose up.

Materials used
